We’ve identified 50 unaccredited universities which previously engaged in National Service -NSA Boss

The Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, has revealed that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has identified 50 unaccredited universities that were previously permitted to have their students engage in national service.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, June 15, 2025, he disclosed that 18 of these universities had expired accreditation, yet they were still allowed to participate in the program.

He emphasised that, per the law, such universities would no longer be eligible for national service.

“Already, the GTEC approval process has mentioned or identified about 50 schools that will not be allowed to do national service. The reason is that their accreditation has expired. For about 18 of them, they have never had accreditation at all, but in the past, they were doing national service,” he stated.

Mr. Gyamfi noted that the NSA has instituted transparent measures to prevent corrupt practices following the infamous ‘Ghost names’ scandal.

As part of these reforms, GTEC will now be responsible for approving and verifying both public and private accredited universities before graduates are accepted for national service.

“From now, we are going to be very transparent about it. Whereas in the past they had not involved GTEC to approve the list of universities and all that, I have sent every list of schools that we have received, including the private institutions, to GTEC. If GTEC says you are not in the list of their accredited universities, there’s no way you will be allowed to do national service either as a school or individual,” he stated.

He has also pledged to publish the official list of accredited universities soon, ensuring that students and institutions are aware of their accreditation status.

While students from these affected institutions may face uncertainty regarding their eligibility for national service, the NSA advised them to consult their institutions and GTEC for further clarification.
