Ministry of Education Releases 2025 BECE School Selection Guidelines

The Ministry of Education has officially announced the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) School Selection Guidelines, outlining key instructions for students, parents, and guardians to follow during the selection period, which runs from May 27 to June 6.

Under the new guidelines, students must select a total of seven schools—five main choices and two alternative options.

School Selection Requirements

Among the five main selections, students must include at least three boarding schools and two day schools.

Additionally, students are restricted to choosing no more than one Category A school and a maximum of two Category B schools.

  1. First choice (Category A school)
  2. Second choice (Category B Boarding school)
  3. Third choice (Category B Day school)
  4. Fourth choice (Category C or D school)
  5. Fifth choice (Category C or D school)
  6. Sixth choice (from Appendix 3)
  7. Seventh choice (from Appendix 3)

TVET Programmes

The ministry has emphasized the inclusion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, urging students to pick five institutions across Categories A, B, and C, regardless of whether they prefer boarding or day schools.

Furthermore, students interested in specialized disciplines such as engineering, medicine, or space science are encouraged to consider STEM-based schools to align with their career aspirations.

Parental involvement remains crucial in this selection process. Parents or guardians are required to sign the selection form before it is submitted to the student’s head teacher.

Additionally, they are advised to keep a copy of the completed form for future reference.

A key point in the guidelines stresses the finality of choices—once a student has been placed in a selected school, changes will not be permitted.

The ministry has urged students and parents to carefully review all options before making their final decisions.
